Printing a prescription (A5 template)

After writing a prescription, you can print it in a standardized A5 format suitable for dispensing to patients, clinical staff, or pharmacy teams. The A5 template provides a professional layout with all essential prescription details.

Before you start

  • The prescription must be saved in the patient's medical case (not just drafted).
  • Ensure your facility has a printer configured and ready.
  • If using a custom print template, verify it is active in your system's Print Templates settings.
  • A5 paper is the standard size; ensure you have appropriate paper stock or are configured to scale to A4 if needed.

Steps

  1. Open the patient's Medical Case from the Patients list or dashboard. Open in Usystems

  2. Navigate to the Prescriptions section and locate the prescription you wish to print.

  3. Click on the prescription entry or look for a Print button or icon (often a printer symbol).

  4. If a dialog box appears, select the print options:

    • Template: Choose the A5 Prescription template (or the default prescription template for your facility).
    • Printer: Select your target printer from the available list.
    • Number of copies: Specify how many copies to print (default is usually 1).
    • Page orientation: Usually portrait for prescriptions.
  5. Review the print preview if available to ensure all details are correct (medication name, dosage, frequency, patient name, date, and clinician signature/stamp area).

  6. Click Print to send the prescription to your printer.

  7. Collect the printed prescription and distribute it to the patient or pharmacy as needed.

Customizing the prescription template

If your facility requires a different layout or additional information on prescriptions:

  1. Go to Settings → Print Templates. Open in Usystems

  2. Find the Prescription or A5 Prescription template in the list.

  3. Click Edit to modify fields, header/footer, logo placement, or other design elements.

  4. Click Save to apply changes. The next time you print, the updated template will be used.

Troubleshooting

  • Print dialog does not appear: Ensure your browser has print permission and that JavaScript is enabled.
  • Prescription details are incomplete in preview: Verify that all required fields (medication name, dosage, frequency) were filled in before saving.
  • Printer not found: Check that your printer is connected, powered on, and properly configured in your system settings.
  • Template looks wrong: Verify that the correct template is selected. If formatting issues persist, check the template design in Settings → Print Templates.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Print immediately after verification: Print prescriptions while the details are fresh in your mind to catch any errors before distribution.
  • Keep a printed copy on file: Many facilities maintain a hard-copy prescription record for audit and compliance purposes. Ensure you print and file as needed per your facility's protocol.
  • A5 is compact: Ensure the prescription text is readable when printed at A5 size. If text appears too small, request a larger template or print at A4 and trim.
  • Batch printing: If printing multiple prescriptions for one patient, print all at once rather than one at a time to save printer handling time.
