The clinic business day (e.g. 08:00 → 08:00 next day)

Understand how Usystems divides a 24-hour clinic day into a rolling business window, not calendar midnight.

What is the clinic business day?

Most scheduling systems use the calendar day — midnight to midnight. But a hospital or clinic with a night shift or extended hours often needs a different cutoff. For example, your clinic might open at 08:00 and want "today's work" to mean 08:00 today through 08:00 tomorrow, not midnight to midnight.

Usystems calls this rolling 24-hour window your business day (or clinic day). It is a continuous period that may cross calendar boundaries.

Why it matters

If you use this feature:

  • Queue numbering resets at your business-day start time, not midnight. So queue token #1 is the first patient of your 08:00 shift, not the first of the calendar day.
  • "Today's queues" and queue reports show only patients seen during your business day, not the calendar day.
  • Shared overnight or extended-hour operations align all staff records to a single, unbroken shift window instead of splitting patients across a midnight line.

How it works in Usystems

By default, Usystems uses 00:00 (midnight) as the business-day start, which is identical to the calendar day — nothing changes until you configure a different time.

Configuring your clinic's business day

To set a custom day-start time for your OPD:

  1. Go to OPD → Settings → Queue Day Open in Usystems

  2. Enter the start time in HH:MM format (e.g., 08:00 for 8 AM).

  3. Save. All queues, queue reports, and queue numbering immediately follow the new window. Existing data is not changed; only new queue activity uses the new boundary.

Examples

  • Clinic day 08:00 → 08:00: A patient seen at 23:30 today (after 08:00 start) and a patient seen at 07:30 tomorrow (before the 08:00 start) are in different business days.
  • Default (00:00): A patient at 23:30 and a patient at 07:30 the next morning are in different calendar days, same as any other system.

Tips

  • The business-day window is per tenant — each constellation (hospital, clinic) has its own setting.
  • If you have a night-shift clinic that works 20:00 one day to 20:00 the next, set the day-start to 20:00.
  • The setting applies only to new queue activity. Existing queue records keep their original timestamps and dates.
