Configuring diagnostic order types
Set up the diagnostic order types your lab or imaging center will use when receiving patient requests.
Configuring diagnostic order types
Diagnostic order types define the categories of tests, imaging studies, and other investigations that your lab or imaging facility can perform. Each order type groups related diagnostic procedures and helps clinicians and billing staff route requests correctly. This guide covers how to create and manage order types for your diagnostic facility.
Before you start
- You must have admin permission to configure diagnostic order types.
- Diagnostic order types must be set up before you can create orders in the system.
- Each order type should represent a logical grouping of tests or imaging modalities (for example, "Blood Tests," "Ultrasound," "CT Imaging," "X-Ray," etc.).
- Know the names and purpose of each order type you want to create in your facility's language (English and Afghan Dari).
Steps
-
Log in to Usystems and go to Settings → Diagnostic Configuration. Open in Usystems
-
Locate the Order Types section on the configuration page.
-
Click Add Order Type (or the plus icon) to create a new diagnostic order type.
-
Enter the Name of the order type in English (for example, "Blood Tests," "Ultrasound," "X-Ray"). This is the name clinicians and staff will see when creating orders.
-
Enter the Name (Dari) — the Afghan Dari translation of the order type (for example, "تستهای خونی," "فراصوت," "پرتونگاری").
-
Optionally, enter a Description to clarify what kinds of tests or studies belong to this order type (for example, "Routine blood work, serology, and microbiology").
-
Check any additional settings if offered (such as default turnaround time, billing category, or required fields for orders of this type).
-
Click Save to create the order type.
-
Repeat steps 3–8 for each order type your facility uses.
-
Once all order types are configured, staff can use them immediately when creating diagnostic orders.
Accounting impact
Diagnostic order types do not directly post to accounting. However, diagnostic services may be linked to service items with price and tax rules that affect invoicing when orders are billed.
Tips & common mistakes
- Organize logically: group tests by clinical department or modality, not by individual procedure. For example, use "Blood Tests" rather than separate types for "CBC," "BMP," and "Lipid Panel."
- Keep names concise: order type names appear in dropdown menus and reports, so use clear, short names that staff can quickly recognize.
- Use consistent terminology: ensure English and Dari names match your facility's existing medical and operational vocabulary.
- Do not delete order types once in use: removing a type may break existing orders. If a type is no longer needed, deactivate it if the option is available, or inform your system administrator.
