What is a storekeeper's role?

As a storekeeper, you are responsible for the physical goods in your organization. Your main responsibilities are:

  • Receive and store goods — accept items that arrive and place them in the right location
  • Track inventory — record what you have, where it is, and how much
  • Fulfill requests — pick items from the shelf when sales staff or operations ask for them
  • Count and reconcile — verify that what's in the system matches what's physically in the warehouse
  • Manage expiry and quality — watch for outdated or damaged goods and flag them

Storekeepers are essential to making sure the company always has the products it needs and prevents losses.

Where are your main tools?

What happens on your first day

  1. Receive your login. Your manager will give you a username and password.
  2. Learn your warehouse layout. Walk the aisles with your supervisor and understand:
    • Where different types of items are stored (drugs in the pharmacy section, spare parts in tools, etc.)
    • Which shelf or bin is which
    • Where damaged or expired goods go
  3. Learn the system. Ask your manager to show you:
    • How to use the barcode scanner (if your company has one)
    • How to record a delivery
    • How to pick items for an order
  4. Understand the stock levels. Ask:
    • Which items are critical (must never run out)?
    • Which items are slow-moving (rarely ordered)?
  5. Ask about safety. Learn where safety equipment is and what your company's rules are for handling heavy or hazardous items.

Key numbers to know

  • Your warehouse or section ID (if your company has multiple locations)
  • Product codes or names for items you handle most
  • Reorder points — the minimum quantity that triggers ordering more stock
  • Expiry dates of current stock (or which items are perishable)

Common daily tasks

As a storekeeper, you may do these tasks:

  • Scan incoming deliveries and verify quantities
  • Place items in their assigned locations
  • Pick items for orders or sales
  • Move items between locations
  • Report expired or damaged goods
  • Count stock at the end of the week or month

What comes next

Once you're familiar with the system, read the Storekeeper: daily workflow guide for the detailed steps—from receiving goods to closing out your day.
