Safety Checklist Before Every Dispensing

Before marking a prescription as dispensed, verify:
- Allergy check passed (no conflicts with patient allergies)
- Medicine is in stock (quantity available >= quantity prescribed)
- Medicine is not expired (check expiry date)
- Correct patient (double-check the name on the prescription)
- Correct medicine and dose (matches what the doctor prescribed)
- Correct quantity (will dispense exactly what the doctor ordered)
Quick tips
- Always check allergies first. Before you do anything else, read the allergy section. It's your biggest safety responsibility.
- Don't trust your memory on stock levels. Always check the Inventory page before dispensing. Your memory can fail, but the system is accurate.
- Log dispensing in real time. Mark each prescription as dispensed as soon as you hand it to the patient. Don't batch them up at the end.
- Reorder when you hit the minimum. If Inventory shows low stock, tell your manager immediately so they can reorder. Don't wait until the medicine runs out.
- Keep lot numbers for recalls. When you dispense, note which lot you used. If there's ever a recall, you'll know exactly which batch was given to which patient.
- If a prescription seems wrong, ask. If the dose is unusually high or low, or if it conflicts with what the patient previously took, contact the prescribing doctor. Better to clarify than to dispense something unsafe.
- Don't dispense without logging. Every medicine that leaves the pharmacy must be logged in Usystems. No exceptions.
