FAQ: Barcodes
Common questions about creating, assigning, and using barcodes in your inventory.
Can I scan a barcode to find a product instead of searching by name?
Yes. At the POS screen, inventory receipt page, or stock count page, you can simply scan a barcode using your barcode scanner. The system will automatically look up and select the product associated with that barcode.
What if two products have the same barcode?
The system will match the first product with that barcode. To avoid confusion and lookup errors, always ensure each barcode is unique across your entire product catalog. If you discover a duplicate, remove the barcode from one of the products and assign a different barcode.
Can I print barcodes for products that don't have a barcode assigned yet?
No. Products must have a barcode assigned before they appear in the print dialog. If you want to print barcodes for a product, first assign a barcode to it in the product details.
Do I have to use the manufacturer's barcode, or can I create my own?
You can use either. Manufacturer barcodes (often printed on the product packaging) are common and convenient. However, if you need to track products uniquely within your business, you can create your own custom barcodes. Either way, the barcode must be unique.
Can I assign multiple barcodes to the same product?
Yes. Some products are sold in different pack sizes or regions with different barcodes. You can add multiple barcodes to a single product, and any of them will work when scanned.
What happens if I delete a barcode from a product?
Once you delete a barcode, it no longer links to that product. If the barcode is scanned, the system will not find a match. You can re-assign the same barcode to a different product, or leave it unused.
Can I print barcodes in bulk?
Yes. Select multiple products on the products list, then choose Print barcodes or Print labels from the actions menu. You can print barcodes for dozens of products at once.
If I change a product name, does the barcode still work?
Yes. The barcode links to the product record itself, not to the product name. Changing the name does not affect scanning or barcode functionality.
