Queue ticket printers and displays
Set up queue ticket printers and wall displays to manage patient flow in clinical settings.
Overview
A queue ticket printer produces numbered tokens or paper tickets for patients waiting in line. A queue display shows the current and next queue numbers so patients know when to proceed. Together, they manage patient flow in busy clinics and hospitals, reducing confusion and wait times.
Before you start
- Permissions: You must be a system administrator or have hardware setup permissions.
- Hardware required:
- A thermal receipt printer (80mm or 58mm) for printing queue tickets.
- A wall-mounted display screen (LCD or LED) or monitor to show queue numbers.
- USB cables, power supplies, and network cable (if using networked display).
- Network access: If using a networked display, ensure it can connect to your clinic network.
- Display software: Download and install any companion software for the display unit.
- Printer driver: Install the receipt printer driver on the device managing the queue.
Steps
Set up the queue ticket printer
-
Connect the thermal printer to the computer running Usystems via USB, or to your network for network printing.
-
Install the printer driver from the manufacturer's website. Restart your computer after installation.
-
Go to Settings → Devices & Hardware → Printers.
Open in Usystems -
Select Queue Ticket Printer and click Configure.
-
Choose the connection type (USB or Network) and select your printer from the detected list.
-
Configure ticket format:
- Set paper width to 58mm or 80mm (match your printer).
- Choose ticket layout (simple number, number + patient name, number + department).
- Enable auto-cut for automatic separation of tickets.
-
Test the printer by clicking Print Sample Ticket. A test ticket should print.
Set up the queue display
-
Mount the display screen in a visible location in your waiting area (ideally at eye level, 1–2 meters from patient seating).
-
Connect the display to power and, if networked, to your clinic network via Ethernet or WiFi.
-
Go to Settings → Queues to link the display to a specific queue or department.
Open in Usystems -
Select Display Configuration and enter the display's IP address or device identifier.
-
Test the display by calling a queue token from the Usystems Queues page. The display should update to show the current number.
-
Adjust display settings:
- Set font size (usually large, 72pt or larger for visibility).
- Choose colors (high contrast; black text on white or white on dark background).
- Set refresh rate (usually 1–2 seconds).
- Enable audio alert (beep or voice announcement when a new ticket is called).
-
Save configuration. The display is now ready for use.
Accounting impact
Queue tickets and displays do not affect accounting records. They are tools for patient management only.
Tips & common mistakes
- Printer prints blank or garbled tickets: Clean the thermal print head with a dry cloth. Update the printer driver.
- Display does not update: Verify the display's IP address or network connection. Restart the display device.
- Display shows old queue numbers: Ensure the queue is refreshing; check that the Usystems queue settings are correct.
- Patients miss their turn: Test the audio alert; if it is too quiet, increase the volume or use a voice announcement option.
- Display brightness is hard to read: Increase font size and use high-contrast colors. Adjust the screen brightness in display settings.
- Printer jams with tickets: Ensure you are using the correct ticket paper width (check your printer model) and that paper is loaded correctly.
