Connect and configure 80mm thermal receipt printers for point-of-sale transactions.

Jul 11, 2026

Overview

An 80mm thermal receipt printer produces compact sales receipts for point-of-sale (POS) transactions. Setting one up lets you print customer receipts immediately after a sale, improving transaction records and customer experience at the checkout.

Before you start

  • Permissions: You must be a system administrator or have hardware setup permissions.
  • Hardware required: An 80mm thermal receipt printer (common brands: Star Micronics, Epson TM series, NCR), USB or network cable, and power supply.
  • Network access: If using a network printer, ensure it can reach your network and is assigned a stable IP address.
  • Driver software: Download and install the printer manufacturer's Windows/Mac driver on the device running Usystems POS.

Steps

  1. Power on the receipt printer and connect the USB cable to the computer running Usystems POS (or connect it to your network if it supports network printing).

  2. Install the printer driver from the manufacturer's website for your operating system. Restart the POS device after installation.

  3. Go to Settings → Hardware by navigating to Settings → Devices & Hardware → Printers.
    Open in Usystems

  4. Select Receipt Printer from the hardware device list, then click Configure.

  5. Choose the printer connection type:

    • Select USB if the printer is directly connected, or Network if it is connected via LAN.
    • For USB, the system auto-detects available printers; choose your printer from the dropdown.
    • For Network, enter the printer's IP address and port (usually 9100 for Epson, 35865 for Star).
  6. Test the printer by clicking Print Test Receipt. A short test receipt should print.

  7. Configure receipt format:

    • Set Paper width to 80mm.
    • Choose Font size (usually 12pt for readability).
    • Enable Auto-cut if your printer supports automatic paper cutting.
  8. Save the configuration and restart the POS application for changes to take effect.

Accounting impact

Receipt printing does not affect accounting records. The sales transaction is recorded in the system when you complete the sale; the printed receipt is a customer copy only.

Tips & common mistakes

  • Printer not detected: Make sure the printer driver is installed and the USB cable is firmly connected. Try a different USB port.
  • Network printer timeout: Verify the IP address is correct and that the printer is powered on and connected to the network.
  • Test receipt fails but POS runs: Restart the POS application; the driver may need to be reloaded.
  • Paper jamming or low-quality output: Clean the thermal print head with a dry cloth and check that you are using the correct 80mm thermal paper.
